5 Vital Tips for Driving in the Rain

With spring right around the corner, it is important to be prepared to drive during a rain shower or thunder storm. Along with the crisp air and budding flowers, spring brings rain storms too. We want to help keep you safe on the roadways this spring. Your trusted car dealer in mid-Missouri is here to point out some safety tips for driving while it is raining. To learn how to improve your driving safety on wet pavement, see the information provided by Spieler's Inc.

1) Turn on Lights

Even if your lights are automatic, you may need to manually turn them on during day-time a rain storm. This helps you see the roadway better and increases the visibility of your vehicle, to others on the road. Many states, Missouri included, require drivers to turn head lights on while it is raining.

2) Slow Down

When the pavement is wet, it is critical to slow down. Your tires may struggle to keep full contact with the pavement, if you are traveling at a high rate of speed. Slowing down can also help you see the roadway better, especially if you are driving in a downpour.

3) Increase Following Distance

It can be harder for your vehicle to come to a quick stop on wet pavement. That is why you should always increase your following distance from the vehicle in front of you, to help give you a longer reaction time to bring your car to a stop, if needed. This can also help increase visibility because vehicles throw off water and kick up roadway precipitation, making it difficult for you to see, if you follow too closely.

4) Avoid Cruise Control

The chance of loosing control of your vehicle increases if you use cruise control, while the pavement is wet. If your vehicle hydroplanes, while the cruise control is set, your tires will continue spinning quickly, even if they are not in contact with the pavement. Often times this leads to a dangerous situation.

5) Keep Calm

It is important to be calm and not panic if you do start to lose control, while driving on wet pavement. Continue steering the vehicle in the direction you intend to go and avoid slamming on the breaks. If the rain is too heavy for you to feel comfortable driving, find a safe place to exit the roadway, preferably in a business parking lot, not the side of the road where you run the risk of being struck by a moving vehicle.

Now that you know some safety tips for driving during the rain, you are ready to hit the road, no matter what the weather forecast has in store. While it is best to avoid driving during serious weather, a rain shower should not stop you from traveling to your destination. It is best to drive on new tires, especially in the rain. The new tire tread helps to push water out of the way, in order for the tire to make full contact with the pavement. If your ride needs new tires this spring, contact the Spieler's Incorporated for all of your needs for vehicle maintenance in mid-Missouri.

Exterior Car Care Tips

With the beautiful weather that is upon mid-Missouri, this is the perfect time to treat your ride to a good cleaning. From a hand wash to wax, there are many ways to shine up your ride! Your trusted car dealer in mid-Missouri is here to help you with some tips for proper care for your car's exterior. Here at Spieler's Inc., we know how much you love your car and we want to help you care for it properly! Take a look at the helpful tips below, for caring for your ride's exterior.

Remove Debris

It is important to remove any debris from your vehicle, as soon as you notice it. From little twigs and leaves to road grime, there is a TON of  debris that can build up on your ride. Especially after the winter months, it is important to wash the road salt off of your vehicle. This can help reduce the chance of rust on the underneath side of your vehicle. Helpful hint: Remember to wash the underside of your ride - a drive through car wash can help you clear that pesky salt off of your vehicle.

Wash Car Regularly

On a regular basis, it is important to wash the exterior of your vehicle. To help keep the paint in good condition, remove any grime that may build up over time. Whether you prefer a car wash or sponging your vehicle with soapy water by hand, a regular cleaning can help keep your vehicle shining and in great condition! To keep a flawless look after you wash, wipe your vehicle down with a dry towel to absorb excess water and reduce the risk of water spots on your newly cleaned paint.

Polish Finish

If you want to give your ride an extra boost, consider waxing the paint surface. Every vehicle has a fresh clear coat when it leaves the factory, over time this protective coat can wear down. To help restore this protective layer, apply a car wax and polish. It is recommended to wax or polish your vehicle's paint at every season change, four times a year. This can help protect the paint surface from any potential damage that the next season may bring. From the damaging sun rays of summer to the road salt of winter, there is potential paint damage at every season change.

Remember the Tires

To complete your vehicle's wash, try to polish the tires. This can help your ride really stand out! The wheels often get piled up with road dirt and break dust, from everyday driving. Try to wipe down these surfaces and shine them up, for a sparkling ride! Shining up the tires can help give your ride that finishing touch it needs, after a nice clean.

Now that you know a little more about caring for your ride, you are ready to get the wash bucket out and start scrubbing! It is important to take care of the exterior of your vehicle. This can help increase the value and make your ride look nice. For a beautiful shine on your ride's exterior, consider thoroughly cleaning your exterior on a regular basis. If you are thinking about buying a new vehicle in mid-Missouri that you polish to perfection, visit Spieler's Incorporated!

Synthetic VS. Conventional Oil

With plenty of options to choose from when it comes to picking an oil for your vehicle, it may be a bit overwhelming. From high-mileage to max life, there are a TON of options for oil to put into your engine. Your trusted car dealership in mid-Missouri is here to help – we can make recommendations on which oil type will work best for your vehicle. Our service department at Spieler’s Inc. has both conventional and synthetic, as well as a blend of the two! To learn more about our oil types, continue reading this week’s blog!

Synthetic Oil

A man-made oil, synthetic oil, is created in a lab, where the materials are controlled. Lubricating and high-performance fluids are added, to make the synthetic oil. Some of the major benefits of synthetic are easier flow through the engine, greater viscosity, hold up for a longer period of time, and reduce friction. A synthetic oil is typically the most expensive option, when it comes time for an oil change. While it does cost more, you will find your oil will need changed less often than a traditional conventional oil.

Conventional Oil

A conventional oil is made from crude oil, pulled from the ground and processed at a refinery. The oil is made to provide lubrication between the moving parts of your vehicle’s engine. It also helps to prevent overheating, as your engine works. Conventional offers engine protection properties, heat breakdown capabilities, and viscosity. This type of oil usually lasts about 3,000 miles before it starts to break down, needing changed. Typically the least expensive oil option, it does not offer the same benefits of a synthetic or a blend.

Synthetic Blend Oil

When the two oil types are mixed together, you get the best of both worlds, a synthetic blend oil. The chemicals blend together to create oxidation resistance and helps improve properties of low temperatures. A synthetic blend also helps protect your engine from stop and go traffic, cold starts, and fluctuating temperatures.

Consult a Professional

Before deciding which oil type to use on your vehicle, reference your owner’s manual for the suggested type. Our mechanics at Spieler’s Inc. can also help you make your decision of which type of oil is best for your vehicle. We look forward to helping you with your next oil change in mid-Missouri!

Maintenance Tips for Your Ride

Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your vehicle and keep it running in proper order. Your trusted car dealership in mid-Missouri is here for all of your maintenance needs for your ride. To help you keep up with it, Spieler’s Incorporated has provided a list of parts to check on a regular basis. To ensure your vehicle is in top running condition, continue reading this week’s blog!

Change Oil & Check Fluids

It is important to check your engine oil, to ensure it is full. Take a look at your owner’s manual to see how often your oil should be changed, and stick to the suggested schedule. Also check the other fluids in your vehicle to ensure they are filled to the proper level.

Replace Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers should be replaced about every six months. After the summer sun dries the blades out and the winter salt damages the blades, it is time to replace your wipers. The rubber portion can become damaged over time and will not clear your windshield properly. A new set of wiper blades can easily be installed, allowing you to easily clean the windshield.

Look at Tires

On a regular basis, you should check your tire pressure. Proper air pressure in your tires helps promote tire wear and a safe ride. Uninflated tires are 3 times more likely to cause an accident, according to Esurance®. It is also recommended to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, to prolong tread life for your tires.

Replace Air Filter

A clean air filter can improve your vehicle’s overall performance. If you pull the filter out and cannot see through it, it is time for a replacement.

Check Over Engine

It is important to look at your engine on a regular basis. From belts to connection wires, ensure all components are in proper working order. Ensure your engine is clear of debris that can cause damage to the vehicle. Give your engine a once over to make sure connections are secure, to prevent a malfunction for your ride.
