Synthetic VS. Conventional Oil

With plenty of options to choose from when it comes to picking an oil for your vehicle, it may be a bit overwhelming. From high-mileage to max life, there are a TON of options for oil to put into your engine. Your trusted car dealership in mid-Missouri is here to help – we can make recommendations on which oil type will work best for your vehicle. Our service department at Spieler’s Inc. has both conventional and synthetic, as well as a blend of the two! To learn more about our oil types, continue reading this week’s blog!

Synthetic Oil

A man-made oil, synthetic oil, is created in a lab, where the materials are controlled. Lubricating and high-performance fluids are added, to make the synthetic oil. Some of the major benefits of synthetic are easier flow through the engine, greater viscosity, hold up for a longer period of time, and reduce friction. A synthetic oil is typically the most expensive option, when it comes time for an oil change. While it does cost more, you will find your oil will need changed less often than a traditional conventional oil.

Conventional Oil

A conventional oil is made from crude oil, pulled from the ground and processed at a refinery. The oil is made to provide lubrication between the moving parts of your vehicle’s engine. It also helps to prevent overheating, as your engine works. Conventional offers engine protection properties, heat breakdown capabilities, and viscosity. This type of oil usually lasts about 3,000 miles before it starts to break down, needing changed. Typically the least expensive oil option, it does not offer the same benefits of a synthetic or a blend.

Synthetic Blend Oil

When the two oil types are mixed together, you get the best of both worlds, a synthetic blend oil. The chemicals blend together to create oxidation resistance and helps improve properties of low temperatures. A synthetic blend also helps protect your engine from stop and go traffic, cold starts, and fluctuating temperatures.
