5 Tips for Improving Visibility During Winter

Winter weather can cause dangerous driving conditions in the Mid-West. Many winter accidents result from poor visibility situations when motorists cannot see the road and other cars. Anything you do to improve visibility can help everyone stay safe during a treacherous time of year. The following five tips from the best car dealership near Jefferson City for improving visibility during winter can help you and your family stay safe on the road.

Windshield Wipers

Wipers can help clear windows of rain, sleet, ice and frost, but they cannot improve visibility if they aren't being used. Make sure you activate your wipers as soon as precipitation starts and leave them on until it stops. Wipers in good condition can deflect precipitation easily, keeping the windshield clear from obstruction. Worn or damaged windshield wipers can leave a thin layer of snow or ice on your windshield or leave streaks that can keep you from properly seeing the road. Check with the most trusted car dealership in Mid-Missouri to have your wipers inspected. If needed, service technicians can quickly install high-quality replacements that meet the specifications of your vehicle.

Snow Removal

We've had nothing but rain so far this winter, but the season has only just begun! Accumulated snow camouflages your car, making it difficult to see while on the road. To stay safe, remove snow from the hood, roof, and trunk of your car as well as from the bumpers before leaving your driveway. Keep a small brush or broom in your car so that you can remove snow no matter where you are.

Headlights

Headlights help other drivers see your car and help you get a good view of the road ahead. You should always turn on your headlights during inclement weather. It's also worth your time to inspect your headlights every couple of months to ensure they are clean and in optimum condition. Promptly replace burned-out or dimmed bulbs for a safer winter driving experience.

Most modern cars use plastic headlight lenses that can become cloudy over time. These aging lenses reduce the effectiveness of your headlights, setting the stage for a low-visibility and more dangerous driving environment. Your #1 dealership near Jefferson City can restore these lenses to clear, like-new condition. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

Safety Flares

Treacherous winter roads become worse when your car breaks down. You can improve the visibility of your disabled car by deploying safety flares that attract and reflect the lights of oncoming vehicles to alert motorists of a stranded stationary car. Buy high-visibility safety flares and store them in your car for emergency use. While you’re at it, stow away some of the items we mentioned in our previous blog, 14 Must-Have Items for Your Emergency Kit!

Driving during poor weather is a risky venture. The best advice Spieler's Inc. can give is to avoid driving during low visibility when possible. Safety is always the #1 priority when it comes to driving a vehicle. Drive slower and pay even closer attention to the roads when inclement weather strikes.

Spieler's DIY: Changing a Flat Tire

Most people will have the unfortunate opportunity to have to change a flat tire sometime during their lifetime.  If you’re lucky, the flat will happen when your car is parked.  If not, then learning how to change a tire quickly on the side of the road will keep you safer, and eliminate some stress. The best car dealership near Jefferson City knows that flat tires always seem to come at inconvenient times. If you do get a flat, just follow these steps from the most trusted car dealer in Mid-Missouri and you will be back on the road in no time.

Gather Your Tools

To keep your car from rolling away, place something in front of the back and front tires. Grab your spare tire, jack and tire iron. You may be saying to yourself, “Where are my jack and spare located on my car?” It may be worth the time to look for it before the flat happens. A great resource to look at is the owner’s manual for the vehicle. Place the jack under the frame near the tire you are about to change. Raise the jack until it is supporting (but not lifting) the car.  Raising the vehicle too high may cause it to fall off the jack and injure you in the process. You're now ready to begin removing the flat tire.

Loosen The Lug Nuts

Remove your hubcap and loosen the nuts by turning them counterclockwise (remember the saying “leftie loosey”, “righty tighty”) just enough to break the resistance. Don't remove them all the way yet. It's much easier to loosen them while the wheel is on the ground!

Raise Your Vehicle With Your Jack

Crank the jack to lift your vehicle high enough to have the flat tire entirely off the ground. Make sure the car is stable as you lift. If there is any instability, lower the jack and fix the problem before you fully lift the car.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Remove the lug nuts the rest of the way, turning them counterclockwise as you did before. Now you can remove the flat tire from the hub and replace it with the spare tire.

Tighten The Lug Nuts

Tighten the nuts until they are snug. Lower your car until the tire is touching the ground, but not all the weight is on the tire and tighten the nuts as much as possible. Completely lower your car to the ground and remove the jack. Finish tightening the nuts and then replace the hubcap. Put the flat tire in your trunk and go to the most trusted service center in Missouri so you can get a new full-sized tire put on as soon as possible.

Spieler's Wants You to be Safe!

Spieler's Inc. wants to keep drivers safe and educated on the road. We recommend practicing a tire change in the driveway; it will make you more comfortable with the process and make a real incident much less stressful. Always remember to carry a small toolkit in the vehicle so you can fix small problems like a flat tire without the need to wait for a mechanic or tow.

What's the Difference Between Conventional and Synthetic Oil?

Today's vehicles have a lot of options when it comes to picking oil for your car's engine. There is conventional motor oil, the hallmark standard for many vehicles or you can choose synthetic oil, which is manufactured in a lab and designed to lubricate your engine efficiently. The best dealership in Mid-Missouri even has a synthetic and conventional blended oil, combining the best of both options. What's the difference between these 3 oils and how can they help your engine achieve its maximum output? Read on to find out why the #1 dealership near Jefferson City offers all three oil types during an oil change.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil (made from crude oil) in your vehicle provides lubrication between the moving parts in your engine and keeps your vehicle from overheating. Generally, a conventional oil change will last around 3,000 miles before the oil starts to break down and becomes less efficient. The biggest benefit to conventional oil is the price: it's significantly cheaper to get an oil change using conventional oil than synthetic oil.

Synthetic Oil

Manufactured in a lab, synthetic oil begins as crude oil and gets refined and chemically synthesized for better performance in an engine. Synthetic oils lubricate your engine better, last longer, and keep the engine from overheating. Most synthetics can be used in extreme weather conditions such as high heat or arctic conditions. This type of oil doesn't leave as much residue in your engine either. It burns cleaner and typically offers more horsepower and efficiency from your engine. A vehicle filled with synthetic oil can last much longer between oil changes, sometimes as long as 20,000 miles! The biggest benefit that synthetic oil offers is the reduced wear and tear on your vehicle's engine.

Synthetic Blend Oil

One of the cons of synthetic oil is the higher price tag. To address this issue, synthetic blends were developed to provide the performance and efficiency of synthetic oils at a price point closer to conventional oil. Different blends provide different benefits, so it's important to ask the most trusted dealership in Missouri what they recommend for your vehicle before choosing a random blend.

Spieler's Inc. Uses the Best Oil for Your Vehicle!

The technology surrounding the oil industry is always improving. Even conventional oil today is vastly improved compared to the oil used 30 years ago. Our vehicle service center in the Jefferson City area recommends reading the owner's manual to determine what type of oil works best for your vehicle. We have options available that will suit any vehicle, from conventional to synthetic oil. Stop by today and make sure your engine is well protected against wear-and-tear, and the elements!

Let Spieler's Handle Your Car Repair Needs

When your car breaks down, taking it to the dealership to an auto mechanic shop can become a real dilemma. While we have the best service repair shop in the Jefferson City area, you may live closer to a mechanic shop, or know a friend who works in the business. It may sound like a good idea to take your car to someone you already have a relationship with; however, that's the relationship you want with your dealer and their service department! Let's look at some tradeoffs between taking your vehicle to the most trusted dealership in Mid-Missouri vs. a general repair center.

Certified Education

Mechanics that work at a general service shop see every kind of vehicle. If you're lucky, you end up with a mechanic who has worked on your vehicle brand enough to be considered experienced - but how do you know? Sometimes, these mechanics have to use their best guess to diagnose and repair your vehicle if they haven't seen that style before. Do you want someone guessing how to repair your vehicle?

The Spieler's Inc. Difference

Working at a dealership as a mechanic requires certifications. If you buy a vehicle from Spieler's Inc., we have expertly trained and certified mechanics who can service and diagnose issues with your vehicle. Our mechanics constantly update their skill sets and work on the same vehicle brands we sell - making them experienced at servicing your vehicle.

The Relationship

Does the local service center value your relationship with them? They only see you when your vehicle needs to be serviced, and once that's complete it's on to the next customer. When you've had an accident, they may not be able to help you - what happens next?

The Spieler's Inc. Difference

The relationship with our customers is as important as choosing the right car. We value our customers! When you bring your vehicle to our service department, it shows that you value our professional work ethic and ability to steer you in the right direction as well. Our relationship starts from the moment you come to our dealership to purchase your vehicle and continues through scheduled maintenance and service appointments. The true value of your continued relationship with us is priceless.

Spieler's Inc. wants a relationship with YOU!

We have the best service department in Missouri. We are also ready to fix and repair your vehicle and we always give professional quality service. Bringing in your vehicle to our repair center shows us that you trust us not only to help you into a new vehicle but that we are your preferred choice to keep your vehicle in optimum running condition. That relationship is the best thing about our dealership, about our community.

5 Winter Driving Tips From Spieler's Inc!

Winter can cause some hazardous road conditions due to snow and poor weather. Your #1 Car dealership in Missouri has you covered! We've put together 5 helpful tips that can assist you with poor road conditions and winter driving. Spieler's Inc. wants to make sure that everyone is safe on the road this season.

1. Tire Pressure

The change in temperature causes dramatic fluctuations in air pressure inside your tires. A drop in ten degrees can lower your overall tire pressure in one tire by 1-2 pounds! Low tire pressure can cause poor handling in bad road conditions and can be detrimental to your fuel economy.

Solution:

Once a month, check your tires in the morning  to make sure they are at the pressure indicated in the owners manual. Checking all four tires takes just a few minutes and ensures that your vehicle's tires are operating at the correct pressure.

2. Accelerating

Lead-foot driving is already hard enough on the vehicle. During inclement weather, it can also cause controllability problems. Your vehicle can overreact on slick surfaces at the smallest turn and braking becomes more difficult. If a driver isn't careful, they could wreck their vehicle.

Solution:

When accelerating, gradually get the car up to speed. The same advice works for turning - do so slowly. Every movement should slow down during poor weather to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

3. Cruise Control

Cruise control is great for long distance and steady driving! Unfortunately, it can't predict a patch of black ice or adjust to changing road conditions. If your vehicle is set to maintain a certain speed and hits a puddle of water or a patch of ice, the computer will sense that the vehicle slowed down and try to accelerate - causing the resulting hydroplane to be much more dangerous.

Solution:

Keep the cruise control off and be a vigilant driver. If you find yourself in a situation where the vehicle is hydroplaning, you can decelerate and maintain positive control over your vehicle.

4. Fuel

If it starts to snow heavily or the rain is beating down hard enough that you cannot continue driving, it's time to pull over. You may not know how long the storm will last or how the road conditions will be after the storm. This means that you could be stuck in the vehicle for a long time! Having a vehicle with a nearly empty tank could become dangerous if stuck out in the elements for a long time.

Solution:

Always keep a half tank of fuel or more in your vehicle. This will allow you to wait out most storms, and keep you warm while you wait for help or for the storm to clear up.

5. Clear Off Your Car

Snow can add a lot of weight to your vehicle, negatively impacting performance and fuel economy. It can also cause additional risks to other drivers on the road. Additionally, snow covering the windshield causes extremely poor visibility.

Solution:

Clear off and properly defrost your vehicle. Remove all the snow and get rid of the excess weight. This increases your visibility and reduces the chance of accidentally causing an accident if a sheet of snow slides off onto the roadway.

Spieler's Inc. Cares about Your Safety.

Driving during heavy winter weather increases the risk of accidents. Your best car dealership near Jefferson City is here to remind you that the cold weather brings about some complicated roadways. By following the rules of the road and maintaining a safety-first mentality, you can reduce the risks associated with driving in the upcoming months.
