Preparing for Your Memorial Day Weekend Road Trip

Many people across the country are gearing up for their Memorial Day Weekend vacations. If you are planning on taking a road trip this weekend, there are some things that you should be mindful of before hitting the road. 1. Check Your Fluids

In order for a car to function properly, it has to have the proper amount of fluids. Whether it is the engine oil, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant or even gasoline, make sure your car has the proper amount of each. You don’t want to get a few minutes down the road and find out you need to fill up, or don’t have enough oil in the car.

2. Check Your Tires

There are two things you need to focus on when checking your tires, including tire pressure and threads. Threads are important to insure proper traction.  Tire pressure is important to insure you do not get a flat tire while on your trip. In the summer, the air pressure should be closer to the maximum tire pressure. If you do not know what size your tire should be filled at, there is a PSI number on the side of the tire.

3. Check Your Lights

Check all the lights on your car, including the headlights, blinkers, break lights and interior lighting. Faulty lights can be dangerous on the road because other drivers will not be able gauge their distance from you. Also, you could be pulled over if your lights aren’t working properly. 

4. Check Your Windshield Wipers

In the Midwest, summer is considered the rainy season. You do not want to be stuck driving in a thunderstorm with windshield wipers that don’t work properly.

5. Check Your Air Conditioning

It gets hot and humid in the summer. You will want to make sure your air conditioning is working properly. The last thing you need on your road trip is to find out the AC is not working and you have to sweat your way through the rest of the drive.

6. Check Your Battery

Check your battery to ensure it is fully charged and has clean terminals. Your road trip will not be fun if your car won’t start.

Keep Your Vehicle Running at Peak Efficiency With An Inspection

Getting your vehicle inspected can keep it running at peak efficiency. A car dealer in Jefferson City can give your vehicle a multi-point inspection to find any potential problems before they develop. The inspection may vary depending on what type of package you get, but here is what you can expect with a basic inspection at Spieler's Inc.:

Vehicle Checkup

Differential - Whether you drive rear-wheel, front-wheel or all-wheel drive, differential fluid needs to be changed at regular intervals. This will be examined during the inspection.

Axle Boots - The axles will be inspected for problems.

Suspension - The entire suspension system of your auto will be checked for the right alignment and levels for your vehicle.

Exhaust System - The muffler system will be examined for holes and leaks and a new muffler installed if needed.

Tips to Be Prepared For Your Next Road Trip

Spring Break is coming and for some people that means a road trip. Don’t cut your trip short with unnecessary stops for car maintenance. Before your trip, take your vehicle to a car dealership in Jefferson City for a checkup, and some basic inspections. With some preventive maintenance, you can be prepared for your adventure. Here are some tips to follow before you hit the road:

Do a Basic Checkup

 

Perform a basic inspection on your vehicle. Check that windshield wipers are functioning properly and fill any fluids that may be low.
