Tips for Traveling with Kids

Traveling with kids can be tricky, but it's an important task to master. If you have kids, you're likely going to be traveling with them a few different times of the year, at the least. Whether it's going on a summer vacation or visiting family around the holidays, the team at Spieler's Inc. knows how important it is to be able to take a road trip with your family. Take a look below to learn a few tips that may come in handy next time you load up the car for a trip!

Plan Your Route

Before you hit the road, know what route you will take to your destination. Try to plan your approximate stops. It's good to get out of the vehicle and stretch your legs. This is a great opportunity for your kids to get out and run some of that pent-up energy off! Also, plan out your stops for fuel. This is important if you are going through a long stretch of highway with little to no gas stations. You don't want to run out of gas on your road trip - it will put a big damper on your plans!

Pack Plenty of Snacks

Buying snacks beforehand is much more inexpensive than buying at a gas station. If you have snacks in the car already, you won't have to stop for a quick bite, either. It's a great way to help keep the car rolling down the highway and keep your crew happy! Granola bars, dried fruits, and nuts are all easy and healthy snacks to keep on hand.

Prepare Entertainment

It's important to have a variety of entertainment options available for your kids. Puzzles and cards are great non-electric game options. A portable DVD player or other electronic device is another way to keep the kids entertained for a couple hours with their favorite movie. Try to play road trip games as a family as well. It's a great way to get the entire vehicle involved and help pass the time!

Pick a Playlist

Rocking out to some great music is another fun way to entertain your kids. Pick a variety of their favorite songs for the ultimate road trip playlist. While their favorites may not be the same as yours, you can always have your own playlist ready for when they take a nap!

Now that you know these tips to make traveling with kids easier, you're ready to plan your next adventure. Before you hit the road, ensure your ride is up for the challenge! Bring your vehicle into our California, MO vehicle maintenance shop. We can do a quick maintenance check and ensure your ride is ready to roll. While you're here, we can perform a routine oil change to help your engine run at it's best for your big excursion with your family!

Easy Vehicle Maintenance Tips

Your vehicle is often times the second largest investment you make - a home is the first. It's important to take the proper maintenance steps when it comes to taking care of your ride. As your car dealership in California, MO, we want to help you take care of your ride to last for years to come (or to trade in for a newer ride at Spieler's Inc.). Take care of your investment when you perform regular maintenance checks on your vehicle.

Change the Oil

Your oil should be changed about every 3,000 miles on your vehicle OR about every 3 months - whichever happens first. Keeping your vehicle on a regular oil change routine can help prolong the life of your engine. Fresh oil helps keep all the moving parts lubricated and functioning as they should. It's an easy maintenance check that should be done on a regular basis to keep your ride running smoothly.

Get an AC Refresh

With the summer sun blazing down, it can get hot in a car very quickly. If your air conditioning system isn't working like it used to, it may be time for an AC refresh. Our maintenance department is offering a discount on routine AC refills to help keep you and your family cool and comfortable this summer!

Check Windshield Wiper Blades

Windshield wipers help clear rain and debris off your windshield and can help ensure you have a clear view when driving. The summer heat can dry out the rubber piece on the blades. Inspect your wiper blades on a regular basis and replace them as soon as you notice any signs of wear and tear. A chunk missing, rubber cracking, or a streaked windshield are all signs that you need to replace your wiper blades.

Refill Fluids

Check all the fluids in your vehicle on a regular basis. This can help ensure all systems have the proper fluids needed to function correctly. Summertime is a popular time of year for road trips. It's important to double check your vehicle fluids before hitting the road on your next getaway. It can help make sure you have enough fluid in the tanks to last through your excursions.

Rotate Tires

Tires should be rotated about every 6,000-10,000 miles. This is a fairly easy task and can be done with every other oil change. It's when you switch the back and front tires. Rotating the tires can help promote even tire wear and help your set of tires last longer.

Look at Lights

There are a lot of lights on a car. Blinker light, tail light, head light, brake lights are all examples of lights needed to safely navigate in your vehicle. Many of these lights help others see you on the road - making it a safe place for you and other drivers.

Now that you have these maintenance tips under your belt, you're ready to start checking them off your list of things to do this summer. Summer heat can be rough on your ride and it's important to ensure it's running in tip-top shape. If you're looking for a trustworthy place to bring your ride for vehicle maintenance near Jefferson City, MO, our dealership is the place for you! We are family owned and look after the safety of your family through our maintenance checks. Contact us today to schedule your vehicle maintenance in California, MO!

5 Bad Habits to Break Behind the Wheel

Bad driving habits are the cause of many accidents on Missouri roadways. About 50,000 people were injured in accidents in the state of Missouri last year. This is a striking statistic and something needs to be done to help reduce the chance of being involved in a vehicle accident. Our car dealership in California, MO cares about each of our customers and wants to help them stay safe on the road. Take a look below for some easy ways to stay safe behind the wheel!

1) Keep Your Speed in Check

Traveling over the recommended speed limit can put you and others on the road in danger. That speed limit is set due to road width and typical traffic on the road. It's important to go the speed limit when driving!

2) Put the Phone Down

The phone is a big distractor for many drivers. Taking your eyes off the road, even for a few seconds can lead to a dangerous situation. Your driving surroundings can change in a split second and if you don't have your full attention on the road, you may be caught off guard.

3) Increase Following Distance

A safe following distance is 1 car length for every ten miles per hour you are traveling. For example, you should have six car lengths between you and the car ahead of you if you are traveling at 60mph. This distance allows adequate reaction time if you need to come to a quick stop or need to make a split second decision.

4) Adjust the Radio Before Departure

Changing the radio or making updates to your GPS are prime examples of activities that should be handled before you put the car in drive. These activities can take your eyes, hands, and attention away from driving and can decrease your reaction time to a change in driving conditions.

5) Use the Turn Signal

Your turn signal allows other drivers on the road to know your intentions. It's important to use your turn signal when making a turn on or off the road. This indicator helps show other drivers what your next action is.

These may seem like simple safety regulations but they can help reduce your chance of being involved in an accident. Vehicle safety is a top concern of many car shoppers. If you plan to buy a car in mid-Missouri, we'd love to show off the safety features of our current vehicle selection. Whether it's a car, truck, SUV, or van, we can help you find the right ride for your wants and needs! Stop by Spieler's Inc. today for a test drive or to check out our current selection.

Tips to Prepare for Your Next Road Trip

Road trips are a fun way to travel with your friends and family. While flying can get you to and from your destination in a hurry, it can be more cost effective to drive. And you'd miss a TON of scenery along the way if you fly. Summer is a popular time for road trips. As your family-owned car dealership in California, MO, we know how much fun traveling can be. Whether you are headed to a specific destination or out to make memories on a long road trip, we'd be honored to help you prepare your ride for the trip. Take a look below to find some helpful tips are you gear up for your next excursion!

1) Fill All Fluids

Check your oil, windshield fluid, and any other engine fluids required. Also, make sure your gas tank is full before your big trip. This can help ensure your ride is ready for your excursion.

2) Clean Car

Take some time to clean your car up before you hit the road. This will give you and your crew a fresh start for your trip. Vacuum out your car and wash the exterior for a sleek ride for your road trip!

3) Plan Your Route

Before you head out, plan your route. Even if you are being adventurous and taking it day-by-day, it's important to have an idea of where you're headed. Summer is prime time for road construction. Try to plan your route around major road construction that may have you sitting in traffic.

4) Have Entertainment Ready

Whether it's an adult only trip or a family vacation, entertainment is often needed when traveling. From movies to games to music, try to plan some entertainment ahead of time. Also, have plenty of options ready. Kids get tired of a certain activity quickly and you may need another entertainment option on hand.

5) Pack Snacks

It's important to have food on hand for your next road trip. This can help you avoid stopping frequently for a quick snack. It can also be more cost effective than buying food at a gas station!

6) Distribute Weight Evenly

When packing your items in your ride, think about comfort and weight distribution. If you have a heavy object, try to put that on the side where less passenger weight will be. This can help your ride travel down the road straighter and not put extra wear and tear on your shocks and tires.

7) Check Your Emergency Kit

Ensure your emergency kit is stocked. Jumper cables, first aid kit, flashlight, and non-perishable food are all great items to include in your kit. While no one plans on needing these items, it sure comes in handy if you do!

Before you hit the road, be sure your ride is ready to take on the road. Stop by our dealership for all of your needs for car maintenance in mid-Missouri. We look forward to helping you prepare your ride! Be sure to tell us about your upcoming trip - we love hearing where our customers are off to on their summer vacations!
