Creating the Ultimate Emergency Kit

Accidents happen! It’s just part of life but being prepared for those accidents is key. Your safety is important to us here at Spieler’s Incorporated. That is why we have put together a list of items to help you create your emergency kit for your car. In this week’s blog, the most trusted car dealer in mid-Missouri will list out the items for the ultimate emergency kit.

First Aid

This really should go unmentioned, but it's often overlooked. A first aid kit, complete with gauze, band-aids, and medical tape/antibiotic ointment really goes a long way in treating those accidental scrapes one can obtain while troubleshooting any emergency.

Blanket

No matter what the weather is, people tend to sleep under a blanket or sheet, right? The same rule applies here. A blanket can keep you warm and protected from the elements should your vehicle break down or if you're in an accident.

Spare Clothes

A spare set of jeans and a shirt are perfect for an emergency, whether that's a stain or for staying dry! Also, a jacket and a pair of gloves are a must-have.

Hand Warmers

Hand and foot warmers interact with oxygen in the air, heating up and keeping you warm for hours. These are perfect for those moments in the winter when the worst could happen.

Snack Items

Nut bars and canned goods are perfect for the average emergency kit because of their ease of access and energy intake they can give the body. Don't forget the can opener!

Water

The most important supply to have on hand, bottled water can be used for drinking, for cooling, and for making food. A few small bottles or a gallon jug should be enough to keep you quenched and still have enough left over to be helpful.

Flashlight

A flashlight is a perfect fit for every kit out there. Make sure to pack fresh batteries or use a flashlight that has a fresh charge. Also, in today's world, a cellphone is an essential item! Charging a portable battery and putting it in the pack is a great way to guarantee a working phone throughout the entire situation.

Tool Kit

A tool kit is a centerpiece to the emergency bag. It should include several items that can be used in nearly every situation!

Jumper Cables

In case the vehicle battery is dead, or simply needs a boost, jumper cables can save the day, provided you have someone else with a vehicle nearby.

An emergency kit should be in every car you own. No matter if it's new or old, or if it's you or your child’s car. All of these items are easy to come by and can easily fit into a duffle bag to be placed in the trunk or under the seat of your car. When an emergency strikes, you will be prepared. At Spieler’s Inc we want you to be safe and be prepared for any accidents or emergency that may arise. That is why your Jefferson City Ram dealer put this list together. Be safe out there!

Items to Keep in your Vehicle's Emergency Kit

You should always be prepared for a breakdown, it can happen when you least expect it. Your vehicle’s emergency kit should include the necessities to change a flat tire, as well as some essentials to keep you safe.

Spieler's Inc. has been a family-owned Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealership in Mid-Missouri since 1968. Our dedicated sales staff and licensed technicians are here to make your dealership experience hassle free! Let our auto repair & car service near Jefferson City handle all of your automotive needs.
Here are some ideas of what you should put in your emergency kit to keep you safe in the event of a break down.

Emergency Tool Kit:

Include several tools that might come in handy, such as a pocket knife, tire jack, tire iron, duct tape, rope, jumper cables, and a flare stick. An ice scraper always comes in handy during freezing temperatures. It is also smart to keep a small fire extinguisher that is easily accessible in your vehicle in case of a fire.

First Aid Kit:

A first aid kit should have gauze, band-aids, pain medication, and antibiotic ointment in case of an emergency. Add several water bottles and non-perishable food items, flashlights with extra batteries, a portable charger, and some hand sanitizer to your kit as well. Having these items in your vehicle’s emergency kit may save your life.

If the weather in your area is unpredictable, keep a spare poncho, wool blankets, and winter coats as well as extra socks, gloves, and hats in storage in the back of your vehicle. Extra layers will keep you and your family warm and protected from the elements if your vehicle breaks down or if you are in an accident.

For fun:

Keep a deck of cards or a book on hand while waiting for help to arrive. If you have a furry friend that frequently cruises the road with you, be sure to pack leashes, bowls, extra water and animal food, and a blanket for them. Make sure that you have a full tank when you hit the road, just in case you break down.

If you have limited space in your vehicle, include only the basics for your kit. The best place to keep your emergency kits are in the trunk of your vehicle in a storage container. Make sure that the kits are securely tied down.

Regular maintenance on your vehicle will keep it running smoothly for as long as possible. Spieler's Inc. provides quick, convenient, and quality service for your vehicle to ensure your vehicle is safe to travel in. Emergency Car Kit for Winter

Driving during the winter months in mid-Missouri can be interesting! From sunny and 50 degrees one day to a freezing rain storm the next, the weather is quite unpredictable! Since it is hard to know what the weather will present from day to day, it is important to always be prepared. Your trusted car dealer near California, MO is here with a list of things to keep in your vehicle this winter. You can find a list for items to keep on hand for your emergency car kit below!

Flashlight-

If you happen to experience bad weather, and slide off the road at night, a flashlight can help! From seeing the damage to your vehicle to flagging down help, a light can come in quite handy if you get stranded, while driving.

Blanket-

If your vehicle gets stuck during a winter storm, you may be inside your car for a while. A blanket can help keep you and your family warm if you have to wait in the car for help to come. If you have to walk a little way for help in the winter, an added layer of a blanket can never hurt!

Jumper Cables-

Whether it is simply the cold temperature or a low-charge, there are a number of reasons for your vehicle to not start, especially during the winter months. A set up jumper cables can come in handy if you have another vehicle that can jump your battery.

Water & Food-

Try to keep a supply of water and non-perishable food items in your back seat or trunk in case of an emergency. If the roads are bad or you get stuck, it may be a while before you are back moving. It is important to stay hydrated and have plenty of food to tie you and your family over, until you can get back on the road.

First Aid Kit-

A first aid kit is an important item to have in your vehicle all year long. If you or anyone in your vehicle gets an injury, caring for it can help jump start healing. It is also convenient to have for an injury that may occur outside the vehicle, but there if you need it!

Ice Scraper-

This may seem like a winter time staple, but an ice scraper can help keep your windshield and windows clear of ice that may accumulate. A clear view is imperative for a safe drive, especially during the winter months!

Shovel & Sand-

If your vehicle does happen to get stuck, a shovel can help you clear snow away from your tire to help it gain traction on the ground. Sand can also help get traction if the snow is too deep or there is ice involved. If you are worried about getting stuck, try to keep a little sand in your vehicle to help you get traction during the winter months.

Winter Driving Tips:

-Increase following distance.
-Try to avoid slick roads.
-Drive slow when roads are bad.
-Keep gas tank as full as possible.

While most advise to stay off the roads when they are bad, sometimes your personal situation does not allow. If you must travel on slick roads this winter, remember to prepare your emergency car kit! Also keep the winter driving tips in mind, when traveling on roads that are snow or ice covered. Remember, our car dealership near Jefferson City, MO wants to ensure you stay safe on the roadways this winter!

Essential Items to Keep in Your Car

Some people keep their car as clean as the day they left the auto dealership in Jefferson City, while others keep enough items in their car to live for weeks. At Spieler's Inc., we believe it is important to be prepared for anything when traveling in your vehicle. We have compiled a list of items we think are essential to have in your car at all times:

Car Repair and Maintenance

Breaking down is never a pleasant experience, but at least you can be prepared by keeping some basic tools that can get you back on the road again.

  • Spare tire, along with a tire jack and tire iron - If you are stranded, you will be able to change the tire yourself as long as you have all three of these. If your wheels require a special key, make sure to keep it in the car.
  • Tire inflater and sealer - Keeping a product like Fix-a-Flat on hand may get you to the repair shop without changing the tire.
  • Jumper cables - You never know when you or someone else will have a dead battery and jumper cables will be warranted.
  • Your car's manual - Keep your car's manual in the glove compartment, so that you know what your car's warning signals mean.
  • Car repair information - Always keep your car insurance claim forms and contact information for your repair shop handy.
  • Tire pressure gauge - Having a low tire may cause a flat or blowout. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your car and check the pressure regularly.  This overlooked basic maintenance procedure can greatly affect the performance of your vehicle.

Safety and Survival

Keeping an emergency kit in your car is a good idea whether you are just traveling to and from work or spending a great deal of time commuting in your car. Some of the essential safety items to keep in your car in case of emergency are:

  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Multi-tool
  • Matches and candle
  • Energy bars
  • Water bottles
  • Weather radio
  • Seat belt cutter
  • Window breaker
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Paper maps

Convenience and Comfort

Many of the essential items on this list can easily fit into a large canvas bag or plastic storage bin. There are some additional items you may want to add to your car that may make your trips more convenient when traveling with kids, or when it is raining perhaps. You never know when you may be out and some of these other things might come in handy:

  • Paper towels
  • Kleenex or a roll of toilet paper
  • Pen and paper
  • Umbrella
  • Spare cash in case of emergency
  • Blanket
  • Change of clothes
  • USB mobile device charger
