Your A/C System: Don't Get Caught Off Guard On the Hottest Day of Summer

In your recent travels, you may have noticed your car is getting a bit stuffy and it's time to turn on your car's air conditioner. The A/C is a cool breeze when it is running properly!  However, if your air conditioner starts to blow warm stale air into your vehicle or not working properly, it is best to schedule a service appointment at your Jefferson City auto dealership. Spieler's Inc.'s service department has the proper equipment and knowledge base to repair your vehicle's A/C system, so you don't get caught off guard on the hottest day of the summer. In addition, there are certain environmental concerns involved with refrigerant that require special attention. We have identified some common issues related to automotive A/C systems to help you determine what may be going on with your vehicle:

Refrigerant Leak

If your car isn't blowing cold air, most likely it is a refrigerant leak. What generally happens is the refrigerant will leak out and reduce the total pressure in the system. Then the low-pressure cut off switch disengages the compressor. This is essentially like turning the A/C switch to off and can wreak havoc within your air-conditioning system. Our Jefferson City vehicle service department can properly diagnose the leak.

Worn Out Compressor

The compressor is the heart of your vehicle's air-conditioning system. It's function is to circulate refrigerant through a series of stages and remove heat from your vehicle. Similar to other automotive parts, the compressor can wear out over time. As a result of its complicated design, compressor failure can be attributed to contamination or other failed parts. Age of your car is another factor that can determine how long a compressor will be able to do its job. Newer cars have air-conditioning systems that are considered reliable, so major issues are rare, but as a car's age and mileage add up, you can expect parts to fail or malfunction.  This will result in little or no cool air coming from the system.

Problems with the Electrical System

The air-conditioning system in your car is a maze of wires, fuses, relays and pressure switches that work in unison to provide safe operation under normal conditions. If one of these components become defective or fail, the system will shut itself down to prevent damage to the system or unsafe conditions for the vehicle's operator.

Essential Items to Keep in Your Car

Some people keep their car as clean as the day they left the auto dealership in Jefferson City, while others keep enough items in their car to live for weeks. At Spieler's Inc., we believe it is important to be prepared for anything when traveling in your vehicle. We have compiled a list of items we think are essential to have in your car at all times:

Car Repair and Maintenance

Breaking down is never a pleasant experience, but at least you can be prepared by keeping some basic tools that can get you back on the road again.

  • Spare tire, along with a tire jack and tire iron - If you are stranded, you will be able to change the tire yourself as long as you have all three of these. If your wheels require a special key, make sure to keep it in the car.
  • Tire inflater and sealer - Keeping a product like Fix-a-Flat on hand may get you to the repair shop without changing the tire.
  • Jumper cables - You never know when you or someone else will have a dead battery and jumper cables will be warranted.
  • Your car's manual - Keep your car's manual in the glove compartment, so that you know what your car's warning signals mean.
  • Car repair information - Always keep your car insurance claim forms and contact information for your repair shop handy.
  • Tire pressure gauge - Having a low tire may cause a flat or blowout. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your car and check the pressure regularly.  This overlooked basic maintenance procedure can greatly affect the performance of your vehicle.

Safety and Survival

Keeping an emergency kit in your car is a good idea whether you are just traveling to and from work or spending a great deal of time commuting in your car. Some of the essential safety items to keep in your car in case of emergency are:

  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Multi-tool
  • Matches and candle
  • Energy bars
  • Water bottles
  • Weather radio
  • Seat belt cutter
  • Window breaker
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Paper maps

Convenience and Comfort

Many of the essential items on this list can easily fit into a large canvas bag or plastic storage bin. There are some additional items you may want to add to your car that may make your trips more convenient when traveling with kids, or when it is raining perhaps. You never know when you may be out and some of these other things might come in handy:

  • Paper towels
  • Kleenex or a roll of toilet paper
  • Pen and paper
  • Umbrella
  • Spare cash in case of emergency
  • Blanket
  • Change of clothes
  • USB mobile device charger
