🚌Safety Tips for Back to School🚌

It's that time of year again, the kids will be going back to school in the next few weeks. As this time of year rolls around, it's important to keep safety tips when it comes to school drop-offs and navigating around buses top of mind. As your dedicated car dealership in California, MO, we want to help keep you and your kids safe this back to school season. Take a look below to learn some quick safety tips reminders to refresh as the school year gears up.

Watch Out For Bus Stops

As you drive to and from school, there will likely be busses traveling along your same route. Keep in mind that a bus cannot come to a stop as quickly as you may be able to; allow adequate stopping distance when flowing a bus. Be prepared to stop frequently when driving behind a bus, they will stop to drop off students often. Remember, all lanes of traffic must stop when students are entering or exiting a bus on the roadway. A 10 foot radius around the bus is the most dangerous place for a child. Be sure to allow enough space for children to exit the bus safely. Keep in mind that children are unpredictable, and often unaware of dangerous situations that a road can present. Being aware of busses and children this back to school season will help promote a safe commute for everyone involved.

Use Caution at the Loading Zone

Schools typically have specific pick-up and drop-off safety suggestions for parents. When taking your kids to school, or picking them up, make sure you know the procedure. Do not double park in a school loading zone; this can prevent a child from seeing other vehicles. Try to avoid picking up or dropping off your children across the street from the school. This may make your commute quicker but can also create a dangerous situation for kids when they have to cross a road or parking lot at a busy time.

Look Out for Pedestrians at Crosswalks

Roads surrounding schools are filled with crosswalks. Many children heading to and from school will use these spaces to cross the road. Do not block a crosswalk when stopped at a light or stop sign, forcing the students to walk around your vehicle and out of the crosswalk. It is a good rule of thumb to stop and let a child cross the road if they are waiting. Sometimes kids forget to stop and wait, and may dart out into the road without being aware of oncoming traffic. Keep an eye out for children walking along or crossing the road when heading back to school this year.

Now that you have a refresh of safety tips of going back to school, you're ready to get your kids ready for the big day. As you prep your children for back to school, you should also ensure your vehicle is ready for the school drop-offs and other activities that go hand in hand with the school year gearing back up. Driving Tips for Back to School

It's hard to believe another summer is coming to an end and it's time for the kids to head back to school. With the increase in foot traffic and vehicles around school zones, it's important to focus and take driving very seriously this time of year. While it's always important to stay alert, remember to stay extra focused as the new back to school routine gets rolling. The best car dealership in mid-MO wants to help you and your kids get to and from school safely. Take a look below to find some helpful tips for your back to school drive.

Think About Traffic Ahead of Time

Especially on the first day of school, many parents will take their children to school themselves, if their time allows. This can lead to an influx of vehicles around the school. Make efforts to get your kids up and around early to reduce the chance of rushing to school. If you arrive to the school drop off zone early, you will have a lesser wait time and be able to get in and out of the parking lot more easily.

Keep Your Speed in Check

Since leaving on time helps to reduce a rush, you won't feel the urge to speed as much if you are on time. Especially with more students crossing roads and buses driving around the neighborhoods, watch your speed. Try to keep your speed at the suggested limit for a safe trip to and from school.

Respect the School Bus

Use caution when you encounter a bus on the roadway. They need a little extra room for braking and turning. If a bus is stopped, it's required by law that you must stop as well. This can help give students a safe boarding experience. Don't pass a bus if they are stopped! A bus has a number of blind spots as well, so be thinking about those if you are driving near one.

Obey School Zone Laws

Many school zones have a no-phone policy. Put the phone down and focus on driving, after all, there are many precious lives making their way to the school too. Follow your child's school loading and unloading rules, as well. There may be a designated spot to drop off and/or park. These regulations are in place for a reason and it's usually for the safety of everyone around the building.

Keep an Eye on Pedestrians

Many kids will walk to school in the mornings, especially when it's still nice outside. Pay extra attention to students walking along the roadways. You never know when a kid is going to dart into traffic, without thinking to look for vehicles traveling on the road.

Be Patient Behind the Wheel

There may be an influx in traffic, especially the first few days of school. Remember to be patient and set a good example for your kids. You want them to have a great start to the day...which includes a positive ride to school.

Now that you've learned more about these safety tips as the school year gears up, you're ready to make that special delivery on the first day of school! It's important to help your kids start the year off on the right foot and driving safely to and from school can help tremendously.
