Top 10 Tips for Your New Driver

As your little one turns fifteen, it's time to learn how to drive with a permit! This is an exciting (and maybe scary) time for parents. As your California, MO car dealership, we see a lot of up and coming drivers come through the doors. Whether it's to learn about the responsibility of car ownership with our maintenance department or deciding on purchasing their first ride, it's important to spend time with your young driver. Take a look below for some tips to share with your new driver before they hit the road!

1) Drive the Speed Limit

Following the speed limit is important for all drivers. Many first time drivers get a thrill from driving fast. Going over the speed limit has a number of consequences. It can be harder to control your vehicle at a high rate of speed, as well as takes longer to stop.

2) Buckle Up

It's the law to wear your seatbelt. Ensure your driver and all passengers are bucked at all times while the vehicle is in motion. Make sure there are never more people in your vehicle than seatbelts.

3) Check your Mirrors

Before you put the car in drive, check your mirrors. Ensure you can see out your rear view, and on both sides of your vehicle with your mirrors. These reflections are important to know exactly what is happening around your vehicle at all times on the roadway.

4) Keep your Attention on the Road

Your full attention should be on the road at any time you are driving. It can be easy to take your eyes off the road to look at your phone, grab your drink, or adjust the radio - but these distractions can be dangerous. Driving is a BIG responsibility and you should stay focused on the road at all times.

5) Remind Passengers to be Courteous

If you have passengers in your car, remind them that driving is a big responsibility and for them to be respectful as you drive. Avoid loud music and distracting conversations with your friends as you navigate the roadway. Also, remember the limits associated with the number of passengers allowed in your vehicle when you first get your license.

6) Watch Other Drivers Carefully

Other drivers can be unpredictable on the roadway. It's important to have defensive driving techniques in your mind as you move around other vehicles on the road. Keep an eye on other drivers when you navigate the roadways!

7) Look Both Ways Before Turning

It's important to ensure the roadway is clear before turning onto it. Look both ways two times to ensure there are no other vehicles in your way as you enter onto the road. Also be patient as you wait for a good time to turn. Take as long as you need for a safe opening when turning on the road.

8) Pull Over for Emergency Vehicles

When an ambulance, fire truck, police car, or other emergency personnel are driving down the road with lights on, it's important to pull over. This can help give them enough room to safely navigate past your vehicle. Pulling off the side of the road gives them enough room and is respectful of the emergency they are trying to help with.

9) Pay Attention near Intersections

An intersection is where two or more roadways cross. This can be a dangerous place for many drivers. Even if it is your turn to move through the intersection, it's important to look both ways. You never know if someone is trying to beat the red light or someone is not paying attention to the stop. Be alert as you enter into intersections.

10) Watch for Animals

Especially at night, there are a number of animals that may cross the road in front of your vehicle. Swerving to avoid an animal can be dangerous. Try to stop quickly so you don't hit the animal but don't make any sudden movements with the wheel. Using your high beams can also help you see animals if they are moving toward the road.
