National FFA Week

Each year FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. This week long tradition dates back to 1947, and was designated during George Washington's birthday, in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. February 20th - 27th, 2016 FFA members, supporters, and alumni celebrate the organization's contributions to local schools, communities and the agricultural industry.

The Official Name

The name FFA (Future Farmers of America) will never change, as it is part of the history of the organization, but it is not just for students who want to become production farmers. FFA welcomes members who aspire to be doctors, scientists, teachers and business owners. The main goal of FFA is to promote personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

The Vision

In 1928, a group of young farmers founded FFA with the mission to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. They taught the organization that farming is not just planting and harvesting, it's a science, business and art. FFA seeks to create positive experiences in the student's lives and promotes healthy lifestyles. Encouraging them through agricultural education builds leadership skills and encourages wise decision making.   

Agricultural Education

Agricultural education prepares students for successful careers in global agricultural, food, fiber, and natural resources. Today over 800,000 students participate is this systematic educational program throughout the U.S. There are three major components to delivering instruction to students:

• Classroom/Laboratory instruction (contextual learning)
• Supervised Agricultural Experience programs (work-based learning)
• Student leadership organizations (National FFA Organization, National Young Farmer Educational Association and National Post-secondary Agricultural Student Organization) 

Becoming a Member

Joining FFA gives members hands-on experiences and tools to become future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, bankers and other professionals. By being a part of the largest student organization in the world, this gives students the ability to apply for more than $2 million in scholarships.
